The IWC Big Pilot’s Watch reference 5002, introduced in 2002, has a 46.2 mm case and is powered by the automatic calibre 5011, which stores a seven-day power reserve in a very large barrel wound by the Pellaton system. It has a large onion crown, a domed sapphire crystal and a plain dial with Arabic numerals and a small seconds. It was made in steel, with gold and platinum editions in the same period.
It revived the Big Pilot idea of the 1940 Fliegerchronometer and gave it a modern movement. The seven-day reserve is shown by a power-reserve indicator on the dial. The 5002 was the first of the modern Big Pilot line.
Collectors and reviewers took to its size and legibility and it helped IWC’s modern pilot watch range grow. The 5002 was replaced in 2010 by the 5009 and is no longer produced.
