About this watch

The Cartier Tank Française, launched in 1996, is a Tank with a steel case integrated into a flat, linked bracelet. It has a rounded rectangular case without the Tank’s brancard side bars, a Roman-numeral dial and a sapphire cabochon crown. The 1996 watches were quartz and came in small, medium and large sizes; I could not confirm the dimensions of each from an official source, so they are not stated here.

The Française took the Tank’s proportions and recast them as a sports-influenced bracelet watch for the 1990s. It was a commercial success and became one of Cartier’s best-selling models, with later versions in gold and with automatic movements.

Collectors regard it as a clean and wearable modern Cartier, and the early quartz versions are an accessible way into the brand. The Française name continues in Cartier’s collection, so the line is still in production although the 1996 original is not.
