About this watch

The Cartier Santos-Dumont Rewind is a limited-edition version of the large Santos-Dumont whose hands turn anticlockwise. The square case is made of platinum and measures 31.4 mm wide, 43.5 mm from lug to lug and 7.3 mm thick, with a polished bezel, brushed flanks, eight visible screws and a beaded crown set with a cabochon. Water resistance is 30 metres and the crystal is sapphire. The dial is a thin slice of carnelian, a red-brown stone, mounted on a brass base and fitted with rhodium-plated Roman numerals and sword hands. The numerals are arranged in reverse order so the hands read correctly while running backwards. Power comes from the hand-wound calibre 230 MC, a version of the 430 MC fitted with extra gearing to reverse the hours and minutes. It runs at 21,600 vph (3 Hz); Cartier’s launch information gives a 38-hour power reserve.

Cartier presented the Rewind at Watches and Wonders in April 2024. It recalls an earlier Cartier watch with a reversed display, the Santos Galbée Rotation Inversée. The closed caseback is engraved with Alberto Santos-Dumont’s signature. The watch is fitted on a burgundy alligator strap with a platinum buckle and is delivered in a lacquered wooden box. Production was limited to 200 numbered pieces, priced at USD 38,400 before taxes.

Press coverage was positive about the concept and execution. SJX described the backwards display as pointless but appealing, wrote that everything about the proportions was just right, and praised the contrast between the platinum case and the dark red stone, while noting that the reversed hands take getting used to and the power reserve is short. Time+Tide’s Borna Bošnjak called the platinum case one of his favourites from any brand and found the Roman numerals made the reversed reading easier, with the closed caseback hiding the movement as his main caveat. Other reviewers noted that the carnelian dial can look slightly uneven depending on the light. The Santos-Dumont Rewind was produced as a 200-piece limited edition, and as of October 2026 it is found mainly through dealers and the secondary market.
