Mercy Amalraj is the co-founder of the Bangalore Watch Company, an independent Indian watch brand that has gained international recognition for its modern approach to horology. Born and raised in the temple town of Madurai, Tamil Nadu, Amalraj attended a Tamil medium school and later pursued higher education in technology. She earned a degree in Computer Science and a Master’s degree in Information Technology and Management from Madurai Kamaraj University. During her academic years, she was also an active athlete, participating in various team sports.
Amalraj began her professional career in the software industry, working as an Applications Engineer at Ostfold Software. She later joined Unified IP Solutions, where she served as a Build and Release Engineer and subsequently as a Quality Assurance (QA) Engineer from 2006 to 2008. Following her tenure in telecommunications, she transitioned into a global lifestyle as a trailing spouse, accompanying her husband and business partner, Nirupesh Joshi, during his international tech-consulting career. While living in Seoul, she took on contract roles specializing in the localization of mobile games for global markets.
During their years living in international hubs like Boston and Hong Kong, Amalraj and Joshi developed a deep appreciation for fine watchmaking. Their observations of the global luxury market and the closure of the iconic Indian state-run manufacturer HMT in 2016 inspired them to return to India. In 2017, they left their corporate careers in Hong Kong to settle in Bangalore, often cited as the historic center of Indian watchmaking. In 2018, they officially launched the Bangalore Watch Company with the goal of creating world-class timepieces that tell modern Indian stories.
Within the company, Amalraj serves as the head of the Ownership Experience section, utilizing her background in quality assurance to oversee the brand’s commitment to craftsmanship and customer interaction. Under her co-leadership, the brand has released several collections, such as the Renaissance and the Apogee, which draw inspiration from Indian history, sports, and space exploration. Amalraj’s transition from the tech sector to the watch industry reflects her vision of establishing a new segment of Indian luxury that prioritizes technical precision and cultural relevance for a 21st-century audience.
