The story of Jules Louis Audemars

Jules Louis Audemars was a foundational figure in Swiss horology, best known as the co-founder of the luxury watch manufacture Audemars Piguet. Born on March 28, 1851, in the village of Le Brassus within the Vallee de Joux, Audemars was part of a lineage deeply rooted in the region’s watchmaking traditions. He received his initial training from his father, Francois Louis Audemars, in an area known as the cradle of high-end Swiss watchmaking due to its concentration of skilled artisans.

In 1875, at the age of 24, Audemars established a workshop at his family home in Le Brassus. Initially working independently, he focused on the production of complex ebauche movements for other prestigious watch manufacturers, including Tiffany & Co. His technical proficiency in creating complicated mechanisms soon led to a partnership with his childhood friend, Edward Auguste Piguet. While the duo began collaborating in 1875, they officially founded the company Audemars Piguet & Cie in 1881.

Within the partnership, Audemars took charge of the technical and production aspects of the business. His commitment to innovation and precision guided the manufacture toward specialized complications. Under his oversight, the brand achieved significant horological milestones, including the development of the world’s first minute repeater wristwatch movement in 1892 and a “Grand Complication” pocket watch in 1899 that featured seven distinct functions.

Audemars was also deeply involved in the local community of Le Brassus, serving as a “Bourgeois du Chenit.” He maintained a long-term vision for the company as a family-owned enterprise, a status it retains to this day. Before his death on October 15, 1918, he ensured the continuity of the brand by passing his knowledge and leadership responsibilities to the next generation, including his son Paul Louis Audemars. Jules Louis Audemars’ legacy is defined by his contribution to the advancement of haute horlogerie and the establishment of one of the most respected names in the global watch industry.
