Johan Sahlin is a Swedish industrial designer and entrepreneur best known as the co-founder of Bravur, an independent watch brand based in Stockholm. Sahlin established the company in 2011 alongside his longtime friend and fellow designer, Magnus Äppelryd (also referred to in some records as Magnus Svensson). The duo launched their venture with the ambition of creating timepieces that bridged the gap between Scandinavian design aesthetics and traditional Swiss watchmaking.
Sahlin’s professional background is rooted in industrial design, a discipline that heavily influences the visual identity of Bravur. Before founding the brand, he worked on a variety of products, but it was a shared frustration with the lack of watches that appealed to his personal style that led him and Äppelryd to enter the horological industry. The pair spent two years in product development before releasing their first collection in 2013.
Under Sahlin’s leadership, Bravur has evolved from a design-driven fashion brand into a specialized manufacturer. Initially focused on quartz-powered timepieces, the company transitioned to mechanical movements with the launch of the BW003 in 2017. This shift coincided with the establishment of the brand’s own assembly and testing operations in Båstad, Sweden, allowing Sahlin to maintain greater control over the technical quality and finishing of each piece.
A defining characteristic of Sahlin’s work at Bravur is the integration of his personal passions into the brand’s creative direction. As an avid cyclist for over 30 years and a former racing cyclist, Sahlin has been instrumental in developing the brand’s “Grand Tour” and “Team Heritage” collections. these series feature limited-edition chronographs and automatic watches inspired by the colors and history of iconic cycling races and teams, such as the Tour de France and the St. Raphaël team.
Sahlin’s design philosophy emphasizes “Swedish Soul, Swiss Heart,” a motto that reflects the brand’s use of Swedish materials and Scandinavian minimalism paired with Swiss-made movements. He is known for a meticulous approach to detail, incorporating subtle features like fluted case sides and skeletonized hands that define the brand’s “uncluttered without being sparse” aesthetic. Today, Sahlin continues to lead Bravur as an independent, founder-owned company, focusing on small-batch production and the preservation of artisanal craftsmanship within the Swedish watchmaking landscape.
