François-Paul Journe is a preeminent French watchmaker and the founder of the independent Swiss manufacture F.P.Journe. Born in Marseille in 1957, Journe’s entry into the world of horology followed an unconventional path; described as a rebellious student, he was enrolled in a local technical college at age 14 before moving to Paris to study at the École d’Horlogerie, from which he graduated in 1976. His formative professional years were spent in the restoration workshop of his uncle, Michel Journe, where he developed a profound expertise by working on 18th and 19th-century masterpieces by horologists such as Abraham-Louis Breguet and Antide Janvier.

Driven by a desire to create rather than solely restore, Journe established his own workshop in Paris in 1985. During this period, he focused on complex commissions for private collectors and luxury houses, including the completion of his first tourbillon pocket watch in 1983. In 1989, he co-founded the movement manufacture THA (Techniques Horlogères Appliquées) in Switzerland, further honing his skills in developing high-complication calibers.

In 1999, Journe launched his eponymous brand, Montres Journe S.A., with the debut of the Tourbillon Souverain. He adopted the Latin motto Invenit et Fecit (Invented and Made), a testament to the fact that his company designs and builds its movements entirely in-house. His work is characterized by technical innovation and a distinct aesthetic, often featuring 18-karat rose gold movements. Among his most celebrated innovations is the Chronomètre à Résonance, which utilizes the physical phenomenon of resonance between two balance wheels to improve chronometric precision.

Under his leadership, the brand has remained strictly independent and highly exclusive, producing approximately 800 to 1,000 timepieces per year from its manufacture in central Geneva. Journe’s contributions to watchmaking have been recognized with numerous accolades, including winning the Aiguille d’Or—the highest honor at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève—an unprecedented three times for the Tourbillon Souverain (2004), the Sonnerie Souveraine (2006), and the Centigraphe Souverain (2008). In 2018, to ensure the long-term continuity of the brand, Journe sold a 20% stake to Chanel. Today, he remains the creative and technical force behind the manufacture, bridging the gap between classical horological science and modern independent watchmaking.
