Movado

Movado is a watch manufacturer with deep Swiss roots, originally founded in 1881 by Achilles Ditesheim in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. Ditesheim began the company as a small workshop with just six watchmakers, and the name Movado—meaning “always in motion” in Esperanto—was adopted in 1905. Today, the brand is a core part of the American-based Movado Group, Inc., following its acquisition in 1983 by Gedalio Grinberg, who was instrumental in repositioning the brand within the North American market.

The brand is primarily celebrated for its contribution to modern design and its association with the minimalist movement. Enthusiasts are often drawn to Movado for its artistic and clean aesthetic, which stands in contrast to the complex, multi-functional dials typical of many luxury watchmakers. This focus on purity of form has made the brand a favorite among those who view watches as both a functional tool and a piece of wearable art. The brand’s historical significance is also a major draw, as its designs have been recognized by major cultural institutions for their industrial and artistic merit.

The most iconic timepiece in the catalog is the Museum Watch, designed by industrial designer Nathan George Horwitt in 1947. Characterized by a single gold dot at 12 o’clock—representing the sun at high noon—and a total absence of numerals, it became the first watch dial ever selected for the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in 1960. This design remains the cornerstone of the brand’s identity and is featured across several modern iterations, including the Museum Classic and the Movado BOLD collection, the latter of which offers contemporary, oversized versions of the signature sun-dot motif.

Beyond its minimalist icons, Movado maintains a diverse lineup that includes the Series 800, a collection of high-performance sports watches. These models feature 200-meter water resistance, screw-down crowns, and unidirectional rotating bezels, catering to those who require durability alongside the brand’s design language. Additionally, the Heritage Series reimagines mid-century designs from the company’s archives, such as the Calendoplan and Celestograf, integrating modern Swiss movements with classic aesthetics.
