Founded in 2017, MING is an independent watch brand based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The company was established by a collective of six watch enthusiasts, led by Ming Thein, a physicist, strategist, and professional photographer. This diverse founding team brought together over 80 years of combined experience in watch collecting to create a brand focused on refined aesthetics and technical innovation.
MING operates using a virtual manufacture model, meaning the brand handles design and strategy in Malaysia while partnering with elite Swiss movement makers and component specialists, such as Agenhor and Schwarz-Etienne, for production. This approach allows the brand to maintain high horological standards while pushing unconventional design boundaries.
The brand has gained a significant following among enthusiasts primarily for its distinct design language, which emphasizes the interplay of light and transparency. MING watches are recognized for their architectural geometry, minimalist dials, and the frequent use of sapphire crystal as a structural element. Collectors often cite the brand’s transparency regarding its production methods and its ability to offer high-specification mechanical timepieces across various price segments—from accessible entry-level models to complex haute horlogerie—as key reasons for their interest.
Several key pieces have defined MING’s portfolio since its inception. The 17.01 was the brand’s debut model, establishing signature design elements such as flared lugs and layered dials. The 17.06 Copper gained international acclaim by winning the Horological Revelation Prize at the 2019 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG). More recently, the 37.09 Bluefin, a highly technical dive watch water-resistant to 600 meters, won the GPHG Sports Watch Prize in 2024. Other notable creations include the LW.01, recognized as one of the world’s lightest mechanical watches, and the 20.01 series, which features sophisticated chronographs.
