Marathon

Marathon Watch Company is a Canadian brand with a history deeply rooted in military service and precision engineering. Founded in 1939 by Morris Wein in Montreal, the company was built on a family horological heritage dating back to 1904 with the Weinsturm Watch Company. Today, the brand remains family-owned, currently managed by the fourth generation of the Wein family, and maintains its headquarters in Ontario, Canada.

The brand is distinguished by its unique manufacturing model, where watches are designed in Canada and hand-assembled in its own facility in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. Since 1941, Marathon has been a primary supplier of timing instruments to the Allied Forces and continues to serve as a major contractor for the U.S. and Canadian armed forces.

Watch enthusiasts and professionals are drawn to Marathon for its “function-first” philosophy and authentic military pedigree. Unlike many brands that produce military-styled watches for the civilian market, Marathon develops its timepieces to meet stringent government specifications, such as the MIL-PRF-46374G standard. Many models feature official NATO Stock Numbers (NSN) engraved on the case back, signifying their status as issued equipment. A hallmark of the brand is the use of self-contained tritium gas tubes on the dials and hands, providing constant, autonomous illumination for low-light legibility without the need for an external light source.

The Marathon catalog is organized into several specialized classes, with the Search and Rescue (SAR) series being the most prominent. Key pieces include: – Government Search and Rescue (GSAR): A 41mm automatic diver built to ISO 6425 standards, featuring 300-meter water resistance and a high-torque Swiss movement. It is designed for use by search and rescue divers and is a staple for both military personnel and collectors.
– Pilot’s Navigator: Developed in 1986 at the request of Kelly Air Force Base, this model features a distinct asymmetrical case made from a high-impact composite fibershell, designed to withstand the pressure changes and rigors of flight operations.
– General Purpose Mechanical (GPM): A rugged field watch designed for infantry use, focusing on durability and essential timekeeping in a compact, 34mm form factor.
– Jumbo Search and Rescue (JSAR) and Jumbo Day-Date (JDD): Larger 46mm iterations of the dive series, utilizing high-torque quartz or automatic movements for those requiring maximum visibility and presence.
