Herbelin

Herbelin is an independent, family-owned French watchmaker that has maintained its autonomy and heritage since its inception. Founded in 1947 by Michel Herbelin, the brand originated in the village of Charquemont, located in the heart of the Jura Mountains near the Swiss border. This region, known as the epicenter of French watchmaking, provided the foundational environment for Michel Herbelin to develop his first timepieces, which he originally named “Impec” to signify his commitment to creating “impeccable” watches with high technical standards. In 2022, to celebrate its 75th anniversary, the company officially transitioned its brand name from Michel Herbelin to simply Herbelin.

The brand’s identity is defined by a fusion of French design elegance and Swiss horological precision. While the watches are designed, engineered, and assembled in the company’s Jura workshops, they are powered by Swiss-made movements. This combination is a primary reason why enthusiasts are drawn to the brand, as it offers a distinct alternative to mainstream luxury brands by prioritizing artisanal quality and “Made in France” craftsmanship. The brand remains under the leadership of the Herbelin family, now moving into its third generation, which reinforces a sense of continuity and personal dedication that appeals to collectors seeking authenticity and traditional values.

Herbelin’s catalog is anchored by several signature collections that have defined the brand over the decades. The most iconic is the Newport, first introduced in 1988. Inspired by the porthole windows of transatlantic yachts, the Newport features a distinctive nautical design characterized by its central lugs and porthole-shaped case. It has evolved into a comprehensive line that includes chronographs, automatic models, and skeletonized versions. Another significant collection is the Antarès, which is particularly popular among women for its patented interchangeable strap system that allows the wearer to customize the watch’s appearance easily.

Beyond its maritime and versatile lines, Herbelin is also recognized for its vintage-inspired and dressier offerings. The Art Déco and Inspiration collections draw on the brand’s historical design archives, featuring geometric cases and classic aesthetics that pay homage to mid-century French style. More recently, the Cap Camarat series has introduced an integrated-bracelet sports watch design, blending brushed steel surfaces with a modern, architectural look. Today, Herbelin produces approximately 90,000 watches annually, ranging from accessible quartz timepieces to high-specification mechanical models, all while maintaining its position as a representative of French watchmaking excellence.
