Michel Herbelin

Michel Herbelin was a pioneering French watchmaker and entrepreneur whose legacy is defined by the founding of the independent watchmaking house that bears his name. Born in 1921 in Charquemont, a village in the Jura Mountains near the Swiss border, Herbelin grew up in the heart of French watchmaking country. Despite his parents’ expectations that he would take over the family business, he pursued a passion for precision mechanics and horology, secretly learning the craft from his uncle during the 1930s.

After honing his skills in various local workshops and a regional watch factory, Herbelin became dissatisfied with the industry’s shift toward mass productivity at the expense of quality following World War II. In 1947, at the age of 26, he established his own independent workshop on the top floor of his parents’ house. He launched his first timepieces under the name Impec, an abbreviation of impeccable, to signal his commitment to high standards of technical precision and French elegance. By sourcing components from specialized suppliers on both sides of the Franco-Swiss border, he established a reputation for reliability and joined the Societe Francaise de Chronometrie.

The success of his collections led to the official establishment of the Michel Herbelin brand in 1965. Throughout his career, Herbelin emphasized a philosophy of independent family ownership and traditional craftsmanship. In the 1970s, his sons Jean-Claude and Pierre-Michel joined the enterprise. Unlike many contemporaries who struggled during the quartz crisis, Herbelin viewed the new technology as an opportunity to innovate, leading the brand to develop successful jewelry watches and thinner, modern models for women.

An accomplished sportsman with a deep affinity for the sea, Herbelin’s personal passions influenced the brand’s creative direction. This was most notably realized in 1988 with the launch of the Newport collection, a nautically inspired line that became the house’s most iconic signature. Even after his retirement in the 1980s, Herbelin remained an influential figure until his passing in 2012 at the age of 91.

Today, the company remains independent and is managed by a third generation of the Herbelin family. Rebranded simply as Herbelin in 2022 to reflect its evolution into a multi-generational family business, the manufacture continues to operate in Charquemont. Michel Herbelin is remembered as a central figure in the preservation of French watchmaking heritage, having combined technical rigor with a distinct aesthetic vision that established his workshop as a globally recognized brand.
