Atowak

Atowak is an independent watch brand based in Hong Kong that has gained significant attention in the microbrand community for its avant-garde approach to horology. Founded in 2019 by Johnny Deng, the brand’s name is a creative nod to its design philosophy; it is derived from the word “UNIQUE” using a Caesar cipher shifted by six positions. Before launching Atowak, Deng and his team spent over a decade in the watch manufacturing industry, providing the technical expertise necessary to develop the complex, non-traditional movements that define the brand today.

The brand officially entered the consumer market in 2020 with the launch of the Windows series on Kickstarter, followed by the Ettore collection in 2021. Atowak is primarily known for making high-end complications, such as wandering hours and tourbillons, accessible to a broader audience. While these features are typically reserved for luxury timepieces costing tens of thousands of dollars, Atowak utilizes modified Miyota movements and in-house modules to offer them at a fraction of that price. Enthusiasts are drawn to the brand for this combination of technical complexity, bold architectural case designs, and a futuristic aesthetic inspired by supercars and geometry.

Key pieces in the Atowak catalog include the Cobra, which features a patented revolving satellite hour indicator and a case made of 316L stainless steel and carbon fiber. The design is inspired by the hooded head of a cobra, with hour indicators that spin across the dial like fangs. Another notable model is the Core, which introduced a central tourbillon powered by their in-house AK-T01 movement, boasting a 120-hour power reserve. Other popular collections like the Tarantula and Spaceship continue the brand’s tradition of using satellite complications and unconventional time displays to challenge traditional Swiss watchmaking norms.
