Atelier Caradant is an independent French watchmaking brand founded in June 2022 by Julien Caradant. Based in Normandy, specifically in Vernon, the workshop was born from Caradant’s desire to pivot from a ten-year career as a railway project engineer toward his lifelong passion for mechanics and horology. To realize this vision, he obtained a professional watchmaking certificate (CAP) from the Lycée Diderot in Paris, spending five years researching and developing a unique method for creating and assembling timepieces that prioritize personal storytelling over traditional heritage.
The brand’s identity is defined by its unconventional use of paper as a primary material for watch dials and oscillating weights. This artistic approach allows for significant creative flexibility, with paper applied to a brass base and decorated using traditional techniques like airbrushing and watercolor, or modern methods such as laser cutting and engraving. Consumers are particularly drawn to Atelier Caradant for this high level of personalization and co-creation, as the brand invites owners to be involved in the design stages to ensure the watch reflects their own history, symbols, or significant locations.
The collection is structured into families that highlight these artisanal techniques. Key pieces include the CityMaps series, which features intricate, laser-sculpted cartography of cities like Paris, Tokyo, or Zurich on the dial. Another notable line is the Patterns collection, which utilizes layered paper to create architectural reliefs and geometric designs such as pyramids or stars. Technically, these watches are powered by the Japanese Miyota 9015 automatic movement, chosen for its reliability and slim profile, and are housed in 39mm or 40mm 316L stainless steel cases with sapphire crystals. By maintaining an artisanal pace and measured production volumes, the workshop focuses on creating unique or limited-edition objects that serve as intimate, wearable souvenirs.
