Julien Caradant is a French engineer and watchmaker who founded Atelier Caradant, an independent watchmaking workshop established in June 2022. Based in Vernon, Normandy, Caradant’s professional background is rooted in mechanical engineering. He spent a decade working as a railway project engineer for a subsidiary of SNCF, focusing on risk management, before pursuing a career transition into the horological industry.
Driven by a lifelong interest in mechanics and a desire to create something original, Caradant began his formal horological education in 2017. He took a one-year training leave to attend the Lycee Diderot in Paris, where he obtained his professional diploma (CAP) in watchmaking. Following this, he spent several years in research and development to refine his manufacturing concept, which officially launched with a crowdfunding campaign.
Caradant’s approach to watchmaking is defined by a focus on personalization and the use of unconventional materials. His signature innovation is the use of paper for watch dials and oscillating weights, which he dresses using various techniques such as airbrushing, watercolor, laser cutting, and engraving. This method allows him to create unique, bespoke timepieces that reflect the personal stories of his clients. His collections, such as CityMaps and Patterns, often feature intricate laser-cut designs representing urban layouts or traditional guilloche patterns.
At his workshop, Caradant oversees the entire creative and assembly process. While he sources specific components externally—such as Miyota 9015 movements from Japan and cases from China—he designs and manufactures every dial individually. His business model emphasizes a collaborative relationship with the wearer, allowing customers to be involved in the design stages, including the selection of hands, colors, and engravings. Today, Julien Caradant continues to operate his independent atelier, combining traditional craftsmanship with modern technology to produce custom-made French automatic watches.
