Armin Strom

Armin Strom is an independent Swiss watch manufacture that has established a reputation for its commitment to “transparent mechanics” and horological innovation. The brand’s history began in 1967 when its namesake, Mr. Armin Strom, opened a watch shop in his native town of Burgdorf, Switzerland. Initially specializing in restoration, Strom became a legend in the art of hand-skeletonization, eventually earning a Guinness World Record for creating the smallest hand-skeletonized watch for ladies. His first eponymous collection debuted at the Basel watch show in 1984.

The modern era of the brand began in 2006 when the stewardship of Strom’s legacy was taken over by two childhood friends from Burgdorf: Master Watchmaker Claude Greisler and businessman Serge Michel. Under their leadership, Armin Strom transitioned into a fully integrated manufacture based in Biel/Bienne. Since 2009, the company has designed, developed, and assembled its movements in-house, with approximately 97 percent of components produced internally. This autonomy allows the brand to execute complex engineering concepts without the constraints of a traditional supply chain.

Enthusiasts are drawn to Armin Strom for its unique fusion of Swiss-German tradition and avant-garde architectural design. A defining characteristic of the brand is its dedication to exposed dial-side mechanics, where every component is hand-finished to haute-horology standards. This “transparent” approach offers wearers a constant view of the movement’s kinetic energy and intricate finishing, such as perlage, polished bevels, and circular graining.

Key pieces within the Armin Strom catalog showcase the brand’s technical prowess and pioneering spirit. The Mirrored Force Resonance is perhaps the most notable, featuring a patented resonance clutch system. This innovation utilizes a compliant spring bridge to synchronize two independent balance wheels, enhancing chronometric stability and precision. Another significant model is the Gravity Equal Force, which introduced the world’s first automatic movement with constant force transmission to a wristwatch. The Orbit further demonstrates the brand’s creativity by incorporating a unique on-demand date complication. Through these collections, Armin Strom continues to bridge the gap between historic craftsmanship and modern engineering.
