Alcadus

Alcadus is an independent watch microbrand established in 2018. Based in Malaysia, the brand focuses on creating timepieces that blend vintage-inspired aesthetics with modern technical specifications. The company’s design philosophy emphasizes understated elegance and high-quality materials, aiming to provide premium horological experiences at an accessible price point for enthusiasts and collectors.

The brand was conceived and founded by Yook Hong, a lifelong horology enthusiast. Hong’s journey into the watch industry began through the niche world of Seiko watch modification. This experience allowed him to develop a deep understanding of watch construction, finishing, and the specific desires of the enthusiast community. Leveraging his expertise in design and materials, he transitioned from modifying existing pieces to developing original designs under the Alcadus name.

Headquartered in Malaysia, Alcadus reflects the growing influence of Southeast Asian designers in the global microbrand market. The brand name itself is a portmanteau derived from two Latin-based words: “altus,” meaning high, noble, or profound, and “cadence,” referring to the beat or measure of rhythmical motion. This naming convention is intended to represent the noble pursuit of traditional watchmaking and the mechanical heartbeat of the movements used within their cases.

Enthusiasts are often drawn to Alcadus for the brand’s commitment to high-level finishing and durability features typically found in more expensive luxury watches. A notable hallmark of the brand is the application of a special scratch-resistant coating on their watch cases and bracelets. This coating often reaches a hardness of 800 HV, which is significantly more resilient than standard uncoated 316L stainless steel, helping to preserve the aesthetic integrity of the watch over time.

Another reason for the brand’s positive reception is its focus on wearable proportions. Many Alcadus models feature case diameters between 36mm and 39mm, catering to the modern trend toward “appropriately-sized” timepieces. Additionally, the brand is known for utilizing high-quality components, such as box-shaped sapphire crystals with multiple layers of inner anti-reflective coating and premium leather straps sourced from reputable tanneries like Tanneries Haas.

The Alcadus Opus was the brand’s debut collection and remains a foundational piece of their catalog. Often described as a “dressy tool watch,” the Opus 39 features a clean, symmetrical dial with a date window at the 6 o’clock position. It utilizes reliable Japanese automatic movements, such as the Miyota 9000 series. The design is characterized by its versatility, functioning effectively as both a formal dress watch and a daily wearer due to its robust construction.

The Dromo collection represents the brand’s entry into the dive watch category. Inspired by 1950s skin divers, the Dromo maintains a slim profile despite its 200-meter water resistance rating. It features a 39mm case, a luminescent sapphire bezel insert, and a box sapphire crystal. Like other Alcadus models, the Dromo is treated with a scratch-resistant coating and is powered by a regulated Miyota 9039 movement, ensuring precise timekeeping within +/- 7 seconds per day.

One of the brand’s most technically ambitious projects is the Quantra collection. This model features a 36mm case powered by a Hangzhou 5015A micro-rotor automatic movement. The use of a micro-rotor allows for a thinner case profile while providing a clear view of the decorated movement through a sapphire exhibition caseback. The Quantra is available in various dial styles, including “Type 01” sector dials and “Type 02” aventurine or salmon dials, showcasing the brand’s range in aesthetic execution.

The Voyager Worldtimer GMT is a recent addition designed for travelers and adventurers. It incorporates a bi-directional world-time bezel engraved with 24 cities and is powered by the Miyota 9075 “true” GMT movement. This allows the wearer to adjust the local hour hand independently when crossing time zones. The Voyager maintains the brand’s signature 39mm case size and includes 200 meters of water resistance, making it a highly functional tool watch with a sophisticated lacquered dial.

Alcadus continues to build its reputation through a customer-centric approach, offering an industry-leading 4-year “Worry-Free Guarantee” that covers both mechanical faults and accidental case damage. By combining classic design cues with modern resilience and regulated mechanical movements, the brand has established a distinct identity within the competitive landscape of independent watchmaking.
