About this watch

The Yema Rallygraf is a motorsport chronograph. The name was first used in 1966 for a watch aimed at car racing, and Formula 1 driver Mario Andretti reportedly wore one. Most modern Rallygraf models are Meca-Quartz chronographs with the Seiko VK64 hybrid: quartz timekeeping plus a mechanical chronograph module that gives the seconds hand a smooth sweep. Professional Watches measured the 2021 Michel Vaillant edition (ref. YMHF1572-MV) at 38.75 mm against an official 39 mm. It is 13.10 mm thick including a 2 mm domed K1 mineral crystal, 48 mm from lug to lug, with 20 mm lugs and a 6 mm non-locking crown. It weighs 65 g on leather, is water resistant to 100 metres, and cost US$399. The Meca-Quartz II panda versions come in a 40 mm case. Mechanical versions include the Alpine Endurance Team model with the in-house YEMA2000 automatic, and the Alpine Cup Series MKII, limited to 150 pieces, with a hand-wound Swiss Sellita SW510 chronograph, a 60-hour power reserve and a sapphire crystal.

Reviewers mostly like the Rallygraf’s retro racing look and price. Professional Watches praised the blue-on-white dial with red accents, the comic-inspired sub-dial shape and the 60-minute counter. It also liked pushers that feel like a mechanical chronograph, quartz accuracy and a size that slips under a shirt cuff, calling it a great deal at $399. Its criticisms were that the sub-dial shape slightly hurts legibility, the hybrid movement will not satisfy fans of fully mechanical calibres, the case runs small, and the “France” marking on the dial is questionable for a Japanese movement. An owner on Dialicious was disappointed to find a Miyota OS21 movement instead of a French one. Other reviewers felt the quartz movement works in a watch built around its racing heritage.

The Rallygraf is in production at Yema. Meca-Quartz models make up the core range, and motorsport partnerships such as Michel Vaillant and Alpine produce regular limited editions. Movements vary by reference, so check the specific model.
