About this watch

The Philippe Dufour Simplicity, first made in 2000, is a hand-finished manual-wind dress watch with a round case in gold or platinum, commonly cited at 37 mm, and an in-house movement made and finished almost entirely by hand. The dial is plain, with applied numerals and a small seconds sub-dial, and the movement shows traditional finishing such as polished bevels and hand-engraved details. I could not confirm a full official specification sheet, so the details above are those the sources agree on.

Dufour, who had restored and made complicated watches for others, set out to make a watch he regarded as the purest expression of his craft. He makes only a handful each year, which is why waiting lists are long, and in 2020 he announced a lottery to allocate the 20th-anniversary Simplicity pieces.

The Simplicity is a reference point for independent watchmaking, and collectors regard it as one of the great modern handmade watches. Philippe Dufour still makes it in very small numbers, so it remains in production in the sense that he continues to build it.
