The Mido Commander Shade M8429.4.27.11 is a retro automatic watch based on the Commander line Mido has produced since 1959. Its round monocoque case is made of 316L stainless steel and measures 37 mm in diameter and 10.5 mm in average thickness, with no conventional lugs, as the bracelet attaches directly to the case. The silver dial has a two-tone sunray finish that shades towards the edge, with applied indexes and luminous hands. Mido specifies a scratch-resistant acrylic crystal rather than sapphire. The automatic movement offers a power reserve of up to 80 hours, and Mido’s product page refers to its Caliber 80 with a Nivachron balance spring. Water resistance is rated at 5 bar, or 50 meters.

The watch displays hours, minutes and central seconds, with a day and date window. It comes on an integrated grey stainless steel Milanese mesh bracelet (reference M605006480) with a jewellery clasp. The Commander Shade is also offered in other two-tone dial colours, including PVD-coated versions such as M8429.3.23.11, and Mido sells the related Commander 1959 with plain dials. The official US list price is USD 1,040, and the watch weighs 85 grams.

Reviewers have mostly praised the Commander Shade for its gradient dial and vintage character. aBlogtoWatch described the 2018 Special Edition as a faithful reinterpretation of the 1979 original, with a case size close to watches of that era, and Gear Patrol presented it at Baselworld 2018 as a reasonably priced mechanical watch full of retro appeal. The integrated mesh bracelet is often praised for its comfort and for leaving no gap between case and bracelet. Buyers should note the acrylic crystal and the modest 50 m water resistance, which make it a dress or office watch rather than a sports watch.
