About this watch

The Lederer Triple Certified Observatory Chronometer, which Lederer’s site lists as the CIC 44 Observatory, is a time-only watch built around Bernhard Lederer’s patented double chronometer escapement. The case is highly polished 904L stainless steel, 44 mm in diameter, with domed sapphire crystals front and back, both with double anti-reflective coating, and 30 m water resistance. Lederer gives the thickness as 10.75 mm, while Monochrome measured 12.2 mm. The dial is matte white sterling silver with blued hands, faceted baton indices at 3, 6, 9 and 12, a railway minute track and a second ten-second track. A recessed small seconds subdial is surrounded by the engraved coordinates of the Geneva, Besançon and Glashütte observatories. The hand-wound calibre 9012 measures 39.3 by 5.98 mm and has 45 jewels and 212 hand-finished components. It beats at 21,600 vph (3 Hz) and has 38 hours of power reserve.

The movement draws on Breguet’s natural escapement and George Daniels’s ideas. It has two barrels, two independent gear trains, two independent escape wheels and two remontoirs d’égalité. Each remontoir releases every 10 seconds, so energy reaches the escapement every 5 seconds. Each watch was certified by the observatories in Geneva, Besançon and Glashütte. Production was limited to eight pieces, each with a compass rose engraved in a different orientation on the movement. The watch comes on a leather strap with a steel pin buckle. It was presented in September 2024 at CHF 146,000 excluding VAT, or CHF 158,000 including VAT as listed by the GPHG.

The watch won the Chronometry Prize at the 2024 GPHG. Monochrome described the dial as clean but far from simple and praised the movement’s architectural feel and finishing. It also noted that the 44 mm case is quite large on the wrist, and that the prototype it handled had a slightly simpler dial than the final version. Time+Tide’s Laura McCreddie-Doak called it a technical marvel behind a restrained dial and the movement the real highlight. She accepted that the price places it beyond most buyers. As of October 2026, Lederer lists the eight-piece edition as sold out.
