The Dan Henry 1970 Automatic Diver is a 40 mm dive watch inspired by the super-compressor divers of the late 1960s and 1970s. Its 316L stainless steel case is 14.8 mm thick, with a 45.7 mm lug-to-lug length and a 22 mm lug width. The matte black dial is ringed by a 60-minute inner rotating bezel, here with an orange first quarter, and the indexes and hands are filled with LumiNova. The dial sits under a double-domed mineral crystal with a sapphire coating and anti-reflective treatment. Inside is the Seiko Japan caliber NH35, an automatic movement with 24 jewels and a 41-hour power reserve. Water resistance is rated at 20 ATM, or 200 meters.
The two screw-down crowns split the work in the classic compressor way: the crown at 2 o’clock turns the inner bezel used to time a dive, and the crown at 4 o’clock sets the time. This version has no date window. It comes on a black rubber strap with easy-release spring bars. Dan Henry also offers the 1970 with blue, black and white accents, with or without a date, and in a 44 mm size. Dan Henry lists the 1970 at USD 320 as a limited edition of 1,970 pieces.
Reviewers see the 1970 as one of the best-value vintage-style divers available. Monochrome called it a strong value proposition when the 40 mm version launched, and T3 described it as a brilliant dive watch that won’t break the bank, praising its twin-crown look and solid build. The 40 mm model quickly became Dan Henry’s best seller and sold out on its first run. The main compromise for the price is the sapphire-coated mineral crystal rather than solid sapphire. The 40 mm no-date version is currently listed as available in stock on Dan Henry’s official website.
