The story of Justin Walters

Justin Walters is an American designer, watchmaker, and entrepreneur known for founding the independent watch brands Marin Instruments and Alterum Watch Company. Based in New Mexico, Walters has established a professional identity characterized by a “less but better” design philosophy, blending technical engineering with minimalist aesthetics.

Walters’ interest in mechanics began in his youth in Kansas City, where he developed a habit of disassembling and reassembling electronics. This curiosity eventually transitioned into horology. In his 20s, he taught himself the basics of watch repair before securing an apprenticeship at a local watch shop. During this period, he also pursued formal studies in visual arts and graphic design, a combination of skills that would later define his approach to brand building.

Before entering the watch industry full-time, Walters built a career in the skateboarding industry. Utilizing his graphic design background, he designed deck graphics and apparel for prominent brands, including Girl Skateboards and Fourstar Clothing. This experience provided him with early insights into product development and the importance of brand identity.

In 2019, Walters founded Marin Instruments with the goal of creating purposeful, utilitarian tool watches. The brand’s debut model, the Skin-Diver, was inspired by mid-century dive watches like the Rolex Submariner and vintage Seiko models. Designed during the global pandemic, the brand emphasizes legibility, durability, and functional engineering over luxury ornamentation. The name “Marin” was chosen for its bold simplicity and maritime connotations, reflecting Walters’ intent to create a modern interpretation of the classic “skin diver” category.

In addition to his entrepreneurial ventures, Walters maintains a professional career in high-precision engineering. He has worked as a watchmaker for Honeywell and currently serves as a satellite engineer for the New Mexico Department of Energy at Los Alamos National Laboratory. His work involves managing delicate equipment and government projects, a role that complements the technical rigor required in watchmaking.

Following the launch of Marin Instruments, Walters introduced the Alterum Watch Company. This second venture focuses on different horological complications, such as the Worldtimer, while maintaining his signature minimalist and contemporary design language. Walters continues to operate both brands from New Mexico, focusing on small-batch production and direct engagement with the watch enthusiast community.
