In 1889, Joseph Auricoste took over the Parisian watch company established in 1854 by Emile Thomas. Under his stewardship, the firm was renamed Auricoste and relocated to Rue de la Boétie in Paris. He maintained the company’s established specialization in marine chronometers while aggressively expanding its prestige through international exhibitions. His efforts led the brand to win a gold medal at the Paris World Fair in 1900, as well as accolades at exhibitions in Hanoi, St. Louis, and Brussels.
Auricoste’s tenure was marked by a strategic focus on the needs of the French state and military. He solidified the brand’s position as an official Horloger de la Marine de l’Etat (Clockmaker to the State Navy) and a supplier to the Observatory of the Bureau des Longitudes and the French Army’s geographic service. During World War I, he oversaw the production of over 30,000 compasses and pocket chronometers for French forces, establishing a “military DNA” that remains central to the brand today.
Beyond his technical contributions, Joseph Auricoste was a skilled businessman who elevated the brand to a symbol of French diplomatic prestige, serving as the official supplier to the Elysée Palace. His work laid the groundwork for the mid-20th-century innovations led by his son, Pierre Auricoste, including collaborations with Patek Philippe and the development of the iconic Type 20 flyback chronograph. Today, Joseph Auricoste is remembered as the pivotal figure who gave the brand its name and established its enduring reputation for accuracy and reliability in the most demanding professional environments.
