Eugène Blum was a Swiss watchmaker and entrepreneur, best known as the co-founder of the luxury watch brand Ebel. In 1911, he established the company in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, alongside his wife, Alice Lévy. The brand name itself, Ebel, was created as an acronym of the initials of their names: Eugène Blum Et Lévy.
The partnership between Blum and Lévy was characterized by a distinct division of labor that shaped the brand’s identity. While Lévy focused on the aesthetic design and jewelry aspects of the timepieces, Blum was responsible for the technical elements and movement construction. This collaboration allowed Ebel to offer watches that balanced reliable mechanical precision with elegant, fashionable designs, a dual focus that distinguished the company from many of its contemporaries.
Under Blum’s leadership, the company achieved early success and recognition. In 1914, Ebel was awarded a gold medal at the Swiss National Exhibition in Bern for its patented ring watches, and in 1925, the brand received further honors for its high jewelry models at the International Decorative Arts Exhibition in Paris. Blum was committed to maintaining high standards of accuracy, and in 1935, Ebel became the first Swiss brand to implement the Western Electric system for precision testing.
During the 1920s and 1930s, Blum navigated the company through challenging economic periods by diversifying its business model. While continuing to produce finished watches, Ebel also supplied high-quality calibers and movements to other major watch houses. This strategic move ensured the firm’s stability and technical reputation within the Swiss horological industry.
Blum remained an active figure in the company until his son, Charles Blum, took over management in 1929. However, the foundational principles established by Eugène Blum—technical excellence, innovation in movement manufacturing, and the integration of masculine and feminine design values—remained central to the brand’s identity as it passed through subsequent generations of the family. Today, Eugène Blum is recognized as a pivotal figure in the history of Swiss watchmaking, having founded a brand that continues to operate as a significant name in the luxury watch market.
