Emma Blatt was a Swiss watch technician and entrepreneur who played a fundamental role in the establishment and branding of the Enicar watch company. Born in the late 19th century, Blatt was a skilled technician whose professional partnership with her husband, Ariste Racine, laid the groundwork for one of Switzerland’s most recognizable 20th-century horological brands.
In October 1913, Blatt and Racine founded their own watchmaking business, the Manufacture d’Horlogerie Ariste Racine, in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. Operating initially from Blatt’s family home, the enterprise began on a modest scale with the couple employing only one additional workman. While Racine managed much of the commercial and technical development, Blatt’s contributions were essential to the brand’s early identity and logistical operations.
Blatt is most notably credited with creating the “Enicar” brand name. When the couple discovered that the family name “Racine” was already registered as a trademark by Jules Racine Sr., Blatt proposed an anagram of the surname, reversing the letters to form “Enicar.” This clever solution allowed the company to establish a distinct identity while maintaining a connection to its founding family. The name was officially registered in January 1914 and eventually became the primary brand for all their timepieces.
As the business expanded, Blatt remained a key figure in its evolution. Following the move to Longeau (now Lengnau), the company transitioned from a home-based assembly facility to a formal factory setting in 1919. Her role in the early management of the firm helped it survive the economic pressures of World War I and the subsequent depression in the watch industry. Under their joint leadership, the company gained a reputation for producing high-quality mechanical movements with an exceptional price-to-quality ratio.
The family legacy Blatt helped build continued through her son, Ariste Racine Jr., who joined the company in 1934 and eventually took over as general director. Even as the brand achieved global fame for its “Sherpa” and “Ultrasonic” models, the company’s origins remained rooted in the collaborative effort of its founders. Emma Blatt’s ingenuity in branding and her technical background as a watch technician remain a significant chapter in the history of Swiss watchmaking, marking her as a pivotal figure in the creation of the Enicar legacy.
