Makoto

Makoto Watch Company is a Canadian microbrand founded in 2024 by Ryan LeClair. Based in Canada, the brand’s identity is built upon a fusion of Canadian design and Japanese aesthetic philosophy. The name Makoto translates from Japanese as genuine honesty, authenticity, or integrity, which serves as the foundational principle for the company’s approach to watchmaking and customer relations.

The brand has gained attention within the enthusiast community for offering high-specification materials and specialized finishing at an accessible price point. Collectors are particularly drawn to the brand’s use of organic and exotic materials for its dials, such as natural stones and meteorite, which ensure that every individual timepiece has a unique visual pattern. Additionally, the inclusion of practical features like ART-treated sapphire crystals, quick-release spring bars, and bracelets equipped with on-the-fly micro-adjustment systems has contributed to the brand’s positive reception.

The flagship offering from the brand is the Kodawari Collection, available in 37mm and 39mm case sizes. This collection is characterized by its slim, scalloped case design and its use of the reliable Japanese Miyota 9015 automatic movement. Key pieces within this series include the Shino, featuring a green Malachite dial; the Sora, with a Lapis Lazuli dial; the Hono, utilizing Red Agate; and the Ryusei, which features a meteorite dial with distinct Widmanstätten patterns. The 37mm variants also introduce materials such as Blue Turquoise and Pink Mother of Pearl.

Beyond its dress-oriented stone dial pieces, Makoto has expanded its catalog to include more robust tool watches. This includes the Shibuya, a model crafted from Grade 5 Titanium inspired by the geometry of Tokyo’s famous crossing, as well as dive-focused models like the Hamana and the fully luminescent Hakusan. These models maintain the brand’s focus on technical specifications, offering increased water resistance and durable construction while adhering to a minimalist Japanese design language.
