The brand was founded by Kenji Uchimura, who conceived the idea nearly a decade prior after being inspired by the classic aesthetic of mid-20th-century British timepieces he encountered while studying in London. Following a tenure at a local watch company to refine his craft, Uchimura launched Kuoe with a mission to share Kyoto’s refined craftsmanship and traditional Japanese aesthetics with a global audience.
The brand has gained a significant following among watch enthusiasts primarily for its commitment to classic, vintage-inspired proportions. Unlike many modern manufacturers that favor larger cases, Kuoe stays true to historical designs by focusing on smaller case sizes, typically ranging from 34mm to 38mm. The Old Smith 90-001 was the brand’s debut model, a minimalist quartz dress watch featuring a small seconds sub-dial inspired by 1960s antique designs. Following its success, the brand released the Old Smith 90-002, an automatic field watch that draws heavily from British military timepieces of the 1940s to 1970s. This model is noted for its textured dials, bold Arabic numerals, and a 35mm case that recreates the silhouette of vintage “dirty dozen” watches.
