Ianos

Ianos is an independent watch brand that was established in 2018 with a focus on integrating Greek history, mythology, and culture into modern horology. Headquartered in Switzerland, the company positions itself as a storyteller in the microbrand sector, aiming to create timepieces that serve as cultural objects rather than just technical instruments. The brand’s name is derived from Ianos, the Greek name for the Roman god Janus, who is depicted with two heads looking toward both the past and the future, symbolizing the brand’s philosophy of honoring heritage through contemporary design.

The company was founded by Jacob Hatzidimitriou, a lawyer by trade with Greek heritage. Hatzidimitriou conceptualized the brand in 2017 after a realization that while other cultures, such as Italy, frequently embedded their national identity into luxury products, Greek culture was underrepresented in the watch industry. Despite having no prior professional background in watchmaking, he launched the brand’s first project on Kickstarter in 2019. His vision was to create a “living Greek history book” where each watch model explores a different era or specific story from Greece’s past.

Enthusiasts are often drawn to Ianos for its departure from traditional watch design tropes and its commitment to original storytelling. Rather than producing homages to famous luxury models, the brand develops unique aesthetics from the ground up. Collectors appreciate the depth of the narratives, which are integrated into the physical design of the watches through specific motifs and functional elements. This approach has helped the brand build a dedicated following that values emotional and cultural resonance alongside technical specifications.

A key technical feature that distinguishes Ianos watches is the implementation of a strap channel on the caseback. This design element involves a deep groove that allows a single-pass strap to sit flush with the case, preventing the strap from adding unnecessary height to the watch on the wrist. Many models also feature a monobloc case construction and fixed lug bars to enhance robustness. These utilitarian choices are often balanced by organic, curved case lines inspired by natural shapes found in the Mediterranean environment.

The brand’s debut model, the Avyssos, is a foundational piece in its dive watch trilogy. It is inspired by ancient Greek diving history and the discovery of the Antikythera mechanism, which was found in a shipwreck dating back to approximately 100 B.C. The watch is notable for its manual-wind movement, such as the ETA 7001 or Sellita SW216-1, which allows for a slim profile of less than 10 mm. Its most distinctive feature is a small running indicator at the 6 o’clock position that mimics the rotating gears of the Antikythera mechanism.

Following the Avyssos, Ianos released the Mihanikos, a model that shifts the narrative focus to the industrial era of Greek sponge diving. The design of this piece is inspired by the “scaphandre” diving suits and the manual air pumps used by divers on the island of Symi. The Mihanikos features a more substantial 43 mm steel case with a matte sandblasted finish and a sterile, porthole-style bezel. The small seconds sub-dial is designed to resemble the circular motion of the original manual air pumps, further reinforcing the historical connection.

The third and final piece of the dive watch trilogy is the Dytis, released in 2025. This model aims to offer a more wearable and compact alternative to its predecessors, featuring a 41 mm case made from Grade 2 titanium. The Dytis continues the brand’s thematic exploration of Greek culture by incorporating the “evil eye” or “mati” symbol into the small seconds indicator at 6 o’clock. This symbol is traditionally used as a good-luck token to ward off evil spirits, serving as a functional running indicator for the watch’s automatic Sellita SW360-1 movement.

The aesthetic of the Dytis is heavily influenced by the colors of the Greek flag, with dial options in specific shades of blue and white. The 12-hour marker on the dial consists of four horizontal lines, another subtle reference to the stripes of the national flag. To ensure the dial remains the primary focal point, Ianos opted for a minimalist bezel design with only a single luminous pip. This model reflects the brand’s evolution toward using modern materials like titanium while maintaining its established design language.

While primarily known for its dive watch trilogy, Ianos has expressed intentions to expand its storytelling beyond the realm of maritime history. The founder’s goal is to continue exploring “deeply human stories” through meaningful design across different categories of timepieces. By maintaining a cohesive DNA and focusing on custom-made components, the brand seeks to ensure that each new release remains a distinct and authentic representation of Hellenic history.

In summary, Ianos has carved a unique niche in the independent watch market by successfully blending Greek cultural identity with Swiss-made quality. Through the leadership of Jacob Hatzidimitriou, the brand has moved from a successful Kickstarter project to an established name known for its original case constructions and narrative-driven designs. By focusing on historical accuracy and artisanal details, Ianos continues to provide collectors with timepieces that offer a tangible connection to the heritage of Greece.
