Helm

Helm is an American-owned watch brand founded in 2014 by Matt Cross. Based in North Carolina and operating as part of The Helm Group Limited, the brand was born from Cross’s personal enthusiasm for simple, robust, and efficient tool watches. The name HELM serves both as a nautical reference and as an acronym for the family members who founded the brand.

The brand has developed a dedicated following, often described as a “cult following,” primarily due to its commitment to high-specification hardware at accessible price points. A significant factor in its reputation is the rigorous testing process; Helm is one of the few microbrands that tests its watches in accordance with the ISO 6425 dive watch standard. This focus on “no-nonsense” utility, combined with high-quality materials like 316L stainless steel, grade 2 titanium, and sapphire crystals, has created such high demand that the brand is well-known for having waitlists that can span several years for certain models.

Key pieces in the Helm collection include the Vanuatu, the brand’s debut model. Named after the South Pacific island nation, it is a 300-meter diver known for its bold, legible dial and rugged construction. The Vanuatu is available in both stainless steel and titanium versions, typically powered by the reliable Seiko NH35 automatic movement. Another prominent model is the Miyako, which offers a more refined aesthetic with a textured dial and a curved sapphire bezel insert, while maintaining the brand’s professional dive specifications. Other notable models include the Khuraburi, which features a crown at the 4 o’clock or 10 o’clock position and an aggressive bezel design, and the Komodo, a more compact but equally robust ISO-tested diver.
