Habring² is an independent Austrian watch brand that has established a reputation for technical ingenuity and a philosophy often described as “honest watchmaking.” Founded in 2004, the brand operates out of Völkermarkt, Austria, and has become a distinguished name in the independent horological scene by focusing on modular complications and mechanical transparency rather than traditional luxury marketing.
The brand was founded by the husband-and-wife team of Richard and Maria Kristina Habring. Richard Habring brought significant expertise to the venture, having previously worked for prestigious manufactures such as IWC and A. Lange & Söhne. During his time at IWC in the early 1990s, he gained international recognition for developing the “Doppelchronograph,” an innovative and simplified split-seconds mechanism. This deep technical background serves as the foundation for the Habring² brand identity.
Enthusiasts are drawn to Habring² for its commitment to functional, understated design and its focus on technical substance. The brand is well-regarded for its “open-source” approach to movement architecture, often utilizing and heavily modifying robust base movements to incorporate clever, proprietary complications. The Habring² collection is defined by several key pieces that showcase their specialized engineering. The Felix, introduced in 2014 to mark the brand’s 10th anniversary, is a cornerstone of their catalog as it features their first fully in-house developed movement, the Caliber A11. Building on the Felix platform, the Erwin incorporates a “jumping seconds” or dead-beat mechanism, where the second hand ticks once per second like a quartz watch, a complication highly prized for its mechanical complexity.
Other notable timepieces include the COS (Crown Operation System) Chronograph, which is distinguished by the absence of traditional pushers; the entire chronograph function is operated solely through the crown. The Doppel 38 continues Richard Habring’s legacy in split-seconds chronographs, offering a wearable 38mm case and a movement designed for reliability. More recent innovations include the Chrono-Felix Top-Second, which features a unique “flashing” red dot indicator at 9 o’clock that signals the running of the chronograph through a spinning propeller under the dial.
