Formex

Formex Swiss Made Watches is an independent, family-owned watch manufacturer established in 1999. The company is headquartered in Biel/Bienne, a city widely recognized as the historical center of the Swiss watchmaking industry. The brand name itself is a portmanteau of the French phrase Forme Extrême, which translates to extreme shape, reflecting the company’s original focus on bold, industrial case architectures.

The brand was founded by two Swiss brothers, Hans Peter Grädel and his sibling, who were both watchmakers and motorsport enthusiasts. Their vision was to merge the engineering principles of high-performance racing cars and bikes with traditional Swiss horology. This background in mechanical engineering led to the development of several technical innovations that remain central to the brand’s identity today.

One of the most significant contributions by the founders was the invention of the patented Case Suspension System. Inspired by the shock-absorbing mechanisms found in racing vehicles, this system utilizes four tiny springs integrated between the upper and lower watch case. This design was originally intended to provide shock absorption for the mechanical movement while also increasing wearer comfort by allowing the case to adapt to the motion of the wrist.

In 2016, the brand underwent a significant strategic shift under the leadership of CEO Raphael Granito. Granito, whose family owns the watch component manufacturer Dexel, transitioned Formex to a direct-to-consumer business model. By moving away from traditional brick-and-mortar retail and celebrity endorsements, the company aimed to offer high-end Swiss watchmaking and advanced engineering at a more accessible price point.

Watch enthusiasts often cite the brand’s commitment to functional innovation as a primary reason for their interest. Beyond the signature suspension system, Formex is known for its highly engineered clasp systems. These include a patented carbon fiber composite folding clasp that features a gradual 7 mm micro-adjustment system, allowing wearers to fine-tune the fit of their strap on the go without the need for tools.

The brand’s catalog is further distinguished by its widespread use of COSC-certified movements. Approximately only 6% of Swiss-made watches receive this chronometer certification, which guarantees high mechanical accuracy and reliability. By ensuring that almost all their mechanical models meet these standards, Formex positions itself as a manufacturer focused on technical performance and precision.

A key piece in the current collection is the Essence series, available in several sizes including 39 mm, 41 mm, and 43 mm. The Essence is characterized by its horizontal CNC-machined dial lines and a refined case that still incorporates the patented suspension system. It is often viewed as a versatile “go anywhere, do anything” watch that balances elegant finishing with robust technical specifications.

Another significant line is the Reef, the brand’s flagship diver’s watch. This collection features 300 meters of water resistance and a unique tool-less interchangeable bezel system, allowing users to change the look of their watch in seconds. The Reef is powered by a COSC-certified Sellita SW300-1 movement and utilizes a stainless steel bracelet with a sophisticated micro-extension system.

For those interested in high-tech materials, the Essence Leggera and the Field Automatic are notable offerings. The Leggera utilizes carbon fiber composite and ceramic to create an exceptionally lightweight version of the Essence design. Meanwhile, the Field Automatic offers a more rugged, military-inspired aesthetic with a titanium case that has been specially treated for increased hardness and scratch resistance.

Today, Formex continues to leverage its close relationship with its parent manufacturing facility, Dexel, to experiment with advanced materials like zirconium oxide ceramic and unique dial textures. By maintaining in-house design, development, and assembly in Biel/Bienne, the brand remains a prominent example of modern independent Swiss watchmaking that prioritizes engineering-driven design and consumer value.
