Benrus

Benrus is an American watchmaking brand that has maintained a significant presence in the horological world for over a century. The company was founded in New York City in 1921 by three Romanian-American brothers: Benjamin, Oscar, and Ralph Lazrus. The name itself is a portmanteau, combining the founder Benjamin’s first name with the first three letters of the family surname. Originally established as a watch repair and assembly business, the brand grew rapidly by importing Swiss movements and combining them with American-designed cases, eventually becoming one of the largest watch manufacturers in the United States by the mid-20th century.

Collectors and enthusiasts are drawn to Benrus primarily for its deep-rooted military heritage and its reputation for producing rugged, functional tool watches. The brand earned a position as a trusted supplier to the U.S. Armed Forces, with its timepieces seeing active service from World War II through the Vietnam War. People appreciate the “no-nonsense” design philosophy of the brand, which prioritizes legibility, durability, and technical precision—qualities that were essential for the pilots and soldiers who originally wore them. This historical credibility, combined with a modern revival that focuses on faithful reissues of its archives, makes the brand a favorite among those who value authenticity and vintage-inspired aesthetics.

The brand’s catalog is defined by several key pieces that have become icons of American watchmaking. The Sky Chief, introduced in 1940, is perhaps its most famous civilian model; it was a purpose-built pilot’s chronograph that became the official watch for many major airlines. In the military sphere, the DTU-2A/P field watch is highly regarded for its service during the Vietnam era. Furthermore, the Type I and Type II dive watches are legendary among collectors. Originally developed in the 1970s to meet the rigorous MIL-W-50717 specifications for elite special forces like the Navy SEALs and CIA operatives, these watches are known for their unique asymmetrical monocoque cases and extreme robustness. Today, Benrus continues to offer modern versions of these models, including COSC-certified updates to the Sky Chief and faithful re-editions of its military-issue divers.
