anOrdain is an independent Scottish watch manufacturer that has carved a unique path in the horological world by specializing in the rare and difficult craft of vitreous enamel dial production. Established in 2015 and based in Glasgow, the brand operates out of the historic Templeton Carpet Factory. The company was founded by Lewis Heath, an industrial designer who was inspired to start the brand while fishing at Loch an Ordain in the Scottish Highlands—the body of water from which the brand takes its name. Heath’s vision was to create a multidisciplinary studio where designers and craftspeople work side-by-side to solve manufacturing challenges in-house.
The brand’s primary appeal lies in its mastery of “Grand Feu” (Great Fire) enamelling, a centuries-old decorative art that involves fusing glass to metal at temperatures exceeding 800°C. This process is notoriously difficult, with high rejection rates, making it a rarity among independent watchmakers. anOrdain is particularly celebrated for inventing the world’s first fumé enamel dials, which feature a delicate gradient effect. Beyond the dials, enthusiasts are drawn to the brand’s bespoke typography, clean minimalist design language, and the transparency of their artisanal process, which is documented through their “Letters from Assynt” series.
The core of anOrdain’s catalog consists of three main collections. The Model 1 is the brand’s quintessential dress watch, featuring a refined case and the signature enamel dial that established their reputation. The Model 2 offers a more rugged, field-watch aesthetic with a smaller case and a focus on durability while still utilizing high-quality enamel or lacquer finishes. The Model 3 represents the brand’s latest evolution, introducing a sleek case design and the “Method” dial, which utilizes high-tech scanning and 3D printing to create an organic texture beneath the enamel. Due to the labor-intensive nature of their work, many of these pieces are sold via a build slot waiting list.
